ScanDisk misses a bad sector due to 'Thorough' option not selected.
Cause:
The 'Thorough' option was not selected prior to running the scan. This option is not selected by default.
Solution:
Select the 'Thorough' option when scanning the disk for surface errors.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'.
3) Select 'System Tools' and select 'ScanDisk'. (The 'ScanDisk' dialog box appears.)

4) Select the drive to be scanned.
5) Select the 'Thorough' radio button in the 'Type of test' group.

6) (Optional) Click 'Advanced...'. (The 'ScanDisk Advanced Options' dialog box appears.)
a) Select the desired advanced ScanDisk options.
b) Click 'OK' to close the ScanDisk Advanced Options' dialog box.
7) (Optional) Select the 'Automatically fix errors' check box.

8) Click 'Start'. (The 'ScanDisk Results' dialog box appears.)

9) When complete, click 'Close' to close the 'ScanDisk Results' dialog box.
10) Click 'Close' to close the 'ScanDisk' dialog box.
